Singur Bill in House today, Cabinet Approves Draft

Kolkata, June 14: The Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill, 2011 will be tabled at 1 pm today in the Assembly. It is 280 pages long, and was approved by the cabinet on Monday and circulated among legislators for a debate.

Less than a month from the day Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the decision to return 400 acres of land to unwilling farmers in Singur, the roadmap to fulfill the promise has got a final shape.

Copies of the draft bill were circulated among lawmakers for their participation in the land debate.

The 280-page bill appends an elaborate list of owners who didn’t take the compensation cheques.

Once the government vests the land, it will return a part to the unwilling landlosers, while the rest will be utilized for socio-economic development, employment generation, industry and for other public purpose.

Once the Bill is through in the Assembly and becomes an Act after the gazette notification, the district magistrate of Hooghly will take over the entire land, along with structures. There are clauses in the proposed bill that no law other than the Act or any Decree of Tribunal or Authority can stop this process.
