Celebrating the change …
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is casting her spell with her charisma virtually in every sphere in Bengal, left an indelible mark on the Independence Day celebration too. It may sound hypothetical though, but when asked people for their reactions, they almost echoed that the dawn on the August 15 brought along a gush of fresh breeze which filled the atmosphere around with a feeling of freedom, freedom from the stalemate situation that prevailed during the past 34-long-years.
While the flood situation looms over rural Bengal, Ms. Banerjee and her government has been trying to control the disaster caused by calamities in war footing. The leader of the mass spent most of her time on the Independence Day at Writers’ taking updates from the districts.
On the outside world however, joy of Paribartan was the cause for people to cheer. The innumerable flag hoisting ceremonies across the city proved that after a long time, perhaps this was a fresh Independence Day for the people of Bengal.
Earlier, Ms.Banerjee became West Bengal’s first woman chief minister to unfurl the national flag as the state joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 65th Independence Day amid stringent security. She inspected a guard of honour near the secretariat, offered floral tributes at the martyrs’ column, garlanded Netaji’s portrait on this day.
On the occasion of Independence Day the Chief Minister made a stop at the Alipore Central Correctional Home here to pay tribute to freedom fighters who had been incarcerated within its walls during the freedom struggle.
Ms. Banerjee went round the premises including the cells in which the famous freedom fighters had been incarcerated.
