State Highways receive a boost in Bengal
The Central Government has acceded to the demand of the state to take over the maintenance work of at least seven major State Highways. These roads will be raised to the status of National Highways (NH) in the coming days. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) maintains only 1028 km of roads in the state. The state PWD Minister had written to the Union Minister and the state Chief Secretary also had written to the Union Ministry for the repair of the National Highways in the State. The new initiative will take the number of National Highways in the State to 27.
The Highways include –
- SH-37A between Hashimari to Jaigaon
- SH-10 near Fulbari
- SH-717 from Maynaguri to Changrabandha
- SH-33A at Pakur
- SH-419 from Kulti to Chittaranjan
- SH 512 from Gazole to Hili, connecting Balurghat
The work of NH 31D is also going on in full swing.
Incidentally, the State Cabinet has recently cleared road projects worth Rs 1,377 crore for developing roads that connects the State with three neighbouring countries – Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The state government has been working to develop road network across the state.
The state has secured first position among other states in strengthening rural connectivity. The rural connectivity project was launched to develop more than 16,000 km of roads in all the 3,349 gram panchayats across the state.
