Gitabithi, Kolkata’s first urban forestry plantation

On Friday, August 9, the mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) inaugurated the civic body’s first urban forestry plantation called Gitabithi.
The project is a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, whose meditations on the environment are well known, and hence the name ‘Gitabithi.
The plantation consists of 150 trees in total planted on 4 cottahs of land along Canal East Road and on 3 cottahs along Canal Circular Road. Bamboo fencing will be put around the places for protection.
The trees that have been planted, and some to be planted, include shirish, bakul, shegun, amlaki, kadam, to name a few.
A senior official of the Parks and Gardens wing of the KMC said such urban forestry projects are of utmost importance to curb pollution in the city.
