Every dept to have specific role for water resource management

In the wake of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing concern over depletion of groundwater levels and stressing on water conservation, the Government has decided to delineate clearly and realign the roles of the departments involved in water resource management through the Jal Dharo Jal Bharo Scheme.

The Water Resources Investigation and Development (WRI&D) Department will be the nodal department, but departments like Irrigation, Agriculture and Public Health Engineering will have specified functions in water conservation.

Schemes like Jal Dharo Jal Bharo and Jalatirtha have brought a lot of happiness to the lives of the people of Bangla, and so emphasis is being given now to the strengthening of their implementation.

As many as 13,945 projects have been taken up in the last eight years in the red laterite zone, comprising Bankura, Jhargram, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, Paschim Bardhaman and parts of Birbhum.

There are 12,600 other types of schemes that involve river-lift irrigation, tube-wells, etc. A total of 3,600 schemes are being run under the World Bank-funded West Bengal Accelerated Development of Minor Irrigation Project.
