Mining activities to start at Deocha-Pachami coal block soon

The State Government will soon start mining activities at the Deocha-Pachami coal block in Birbhum district.

After needlessly delaying for three years, the Centre finally gave the clearance recently. This is a victory for the persistence and tenacity of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been leading the efforts on this by writing to the Central Government.

It was also she who announced the good news during the course of her speech after unveiling a series of projects at the Calcutta Leather Complex on July 18.

The Deocha-Pachami block holds the largest reserve of coal in India and is one of the largest reserves in Asia.  The entire coal block hosts a reserve of 2,102 million tonnes over an area of 12.31 sq km.

Mamata Banerjee said Deocha-Pachami will create a total employment of one lakh and that the State Government is going to invest Rs 12,000 crore for the project.

The project will fulfil the demand for coal (including for producing electricity) not only of Bangla but of adjacent States as well.
